Can You Put Cardboard In The Oven?

Can cardboard go in the oven?

With regard to safety, the simple answer is no. If the cardboard is left in the oven for extended periods at temperatures of over 300°C it could catch fire for some types of ovens and chemicals from the cardboard could be released into the food making it inedible or unpleasant to eat.

When we order our eyes are often bigger than our bellies, resulting in leftovers which we then toss into the fridge for another time.

So what should we do and what steps can we take to ensure our food is not contaminated and unsafe to eat and that we don’t run a fire safety risk when putting cardboard into the oven?

Cardboard Chinese takeout boxes

Many of these are lined with some form of plastic to keep the contents not only inside the box but to stop the chemicals in the cardboard from reacting with the food.

If you place these types of lined cardboard boxes into the oven, they may react with the food making it potentially inedible and at the very very least, may give it a slightly unpleasant taste or smell.

A better choice is to remove the food from these boxes and place them into oven-safe containers, such as a glass casserole dish or metal, like a baking pan. Then heat up the food, and then serve it using plates or bowls as needed.

Cardboard pizza boxes

These boxes follow the same rules as other takeout containers. Even innocent-looking, plain brown boxes contain many chemicals including the printed inks on the box, more if the box is colored, like bright white for example.

These types of boxes will often contain more potentially harmful chemicals so more caution is recommended.

The best thing to do in this type of situation is to not put the cardboard in the oven, which may catch fire. Instead, transfer the food onto an oven-safe metal tray, a sheet of aluminum foil placed directly onto the rack, or onto the rack with no foil, though this is my least favorite option as grease, cheese, or toppings from the pizza may drop into the oven and burn onto the bottom, giving you a large cleaning headache you didn’t need or want.

Frozen ready meals

As you know we live in an age of over-packaging, so in many cases, plastic is an issue for us as well as cardboard.

When you look at boxes of most ready meals come in an outer cardboard box or sleeve but often these inner boxes are made of or contain plastic making them highly unsuitable for ovens.

Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions before tossing your food, box and all, into the oven.

Quite often you will see directions to remove the cardboard outer, transfer the food to an oven-safe version, place it on a metal tray, or sometimes pierce the plastic top or remove the top completely.

Other items like your frozen pizza will come in an outer box made of cardboard but inside the pizza will be shrink-wrapped onto a cardboard base. You may think this is a nice and easy pizza pan for you to simply pop into the oven but this base is only to keep the pizza and its toppings together rather than settling in a heap if you upend it and allow it to defrost.

Don’t put this inner tray in the oven. It may make the frozen pizza taste funny, it will slow down the cooking process and if you also forget to remove the plastic you will end up ruining your pizza, maybe the tray, and will have to spend ages cleaning and ventilating your kitchen, as it will smell awful.

If you eat takeout pizza or frozen pizzas often then consider investing in a metal pizza pan that can withstand the heat and will not harm the food.
